“So where were we?” I turn around to her, pretending I wasn’t distracted by the mosquito that was trying to bite me in the face.
“You are always not concentrating.” She says.
“Says whom?” I thought we were talking about her sister.
“My sister.” She is biting her fingernail. “But you are not concentrating. She’s right.”
“And you agree?”
“The fact says it all.” She shrugs, and keeps walking.
I guess people don’t really get it-never discuss your sister and her love affairs with her boyfriend. Or am I? Am I her boyfriend?
Well I will write it down tonight when I get back: “the downside of modern love: the unconfirmed relationship and the officious sisters.” Great line, isn’t it? Could be the title to my next book. My one and only book, that is going to be published in the near future.
“Did she say anything else?” I should act like I wasn’t thinking about other stuff-always be serious and focusing on…your girlfriend’s...or you-know-who’s sister.
“No. She’s obsessed with you. Always Johnny this, Johnny that, like you are the most perfect man ever.” She talks as if with utter disgust. “I mean, no offense, how is it even possible?”
“So you don’t agree with her?”
“No man is completely perfect, you know. She is just too ideal about all these stuffs with you.”
“Maybe it’s just romanticism.” I don’t know why I said that.
“Romanticism is not always good. You can’t blind yourself with illusion.” She talks with a really seriously cynical tone.
“But I am not an illusion. Neither is she.” I am confused.
“Well. The interaction between two objects sometimes cannot be defined and decided by the entity of the two objects per se.”
I don’t know what to say to this 16-year-old girl who has all these ridiculous ideas in her head.
“Peter told me that. He’s my chemistry class partner.” She says.
Well. I guess it is me who’s not following young people’s mindsets. Probably to this young lady, eight years later she will realize that she is supposed to enjoy the night walk and appreciate the river view instead of talking about this un-understandable chemistry class partner. Or maybe she should be aware that she was supposed to talk with me about how her sister is recently and anything I should improve in my relationship with her sister. Anyway, none of these purposes have been achieved so far.
And it is already 11 pm now.
“What I am saying is that despite all the romance you and my sister have had so far, I don’t think you guys are going to hold up for long.” She stops, turns to me, and speaks with a determined expression.
“Why so?”
“It is science. And you will see.” She stands closer to me, and whispers. “OK. I am going home now. Night.”
Then she runs away, just like thousands of high school students who are about to pass their curfew and should get back to have the last burger-phone call with their best friends. She is not going to talk to her sister about me. But she would probably talk to her best friend, whose name might be Maggie or Lily or Elise, about how she gave a science lesson on love and relationship management to her sister’s boyfriend-still, am I…Her sister’s boyfriend…?…about how clumsy I have been just walking beside her. Well, I guess after tonight her sister might not call me anymore. Oh, did that just come across my mind? That could be an interesting story idea. I need to write it down when I get back.
